MER’s primary goal is to conduct scientific research and coordinate or take part in marine research projects. MER’s researchers have and are preparing several research proposals, have experience with research programs and are working hard to revolutionize and open new doors to marine research at Cyprus.

Recently MER coordinated a 3 year project titled ‘A holistic approach for the evaluation of the ecological status of coastal waters. The case of Vasiliko Bay.’ funded by the Research Foundation of Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus and European Regional Development Fund) under the National Framework Programme.

Between 2012-2016, MER acted as the local RTD performer/partner to a 4 year project titled IDREEM‘Increasing Industrial Resource Efficiency in European Mariculture’ funded by the European Commission under FP7-ENV-2012.

Since 2017, MER is the scientific coordinator of RELIONMED – ‘Preventing a LIONfish invasion in the MEDiterranean through early response and targeted REmoval‘, funded by the European Commission under the LIFE+ 2016 Programme.

Apart from these research programs, MER has coordinated different local research studies such as data collection and processing to assess pelagic fisheries and baseline identification of marine species in MPAs and Natura 2000 Sites and monitoring of marine invasive alien species.

MER seeks and is open to collaborations with local and international research institutions, public bodies, NGOs and private companies that undertake scientific research and are seeking a marine ecologist and aquaculture/fisheries specialist, capable and reliable partner from the eastern Mediterranean.
