Title:
Marine biodiversity assessment and habitat mapping at Pyrgos, Limassol
Duration:
ca 2 months (October – November 2018)
Subcontracted by:
Nicolaides & Associates Ltd
Project Description:
MER carried out coastal field surveys and biodiversity assessments at Pyrgos (east Limassol), near the new Parklane Hotel (former MERIDIEN). A breakwater is proposed to be constructed that is expected to stabilize the coastal zone and reduce the erosion observed at some points on the coastline where there are semi-submerged natural reefs.
MER carried out bathymetry of the study area, which was used for the simulation of the dispersion model, mapped important habitats (rocky reefs and seagrass beds) in the study area and recorded marine macroscopic biodiversity and predominant species in priority habitats.
