Funded by:
Department of Public Works

Subcontracted by:
National Technical University of Athens, Greece

Project Description:
In October of 2010, the Department of Public Works of the Ministry of Communications and Works assigned the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) to provide consulting services related to the protection and improvement of Ormidia’s shoreline (Larnaca district) (# of Tender: PS/D/305). In 2011 the NTUA sub-contracted MER for conducting a nearshore marine biological survey to fit the EIA.

MER assessed the ecological status at the proposed area (around 1km of coastline), mapped the seagrass Posidonia oceanica beds and priority habitats with ArcGIS, recorded transects with an underwater camera, photographed and identified macroscopic flora and fauna species, and evaluated the impacts to the marine environment from the construction of breakwaters to protect the coastal region from erosion. The report was submitted to NTUA in 2011 and the EIA (51/2013) was submitted to the Department of Environment in 2013.
