Funded by:
Department of Public Works

Subcontracted by:
National Technical University of Athens, Greece

Project Description:
In July of 2009, the Department of Public Works of the Ministry of Communications and Works assigned the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) to provide consulting services related to the protection and improvement of Oroklini’s shoreline (Larnaca district) (# of Tender: PS/D/304). In 2010 the NTUA sub-contracted MER to conduct a nearshore marine biological survey to fit the EIA.

MER assessed the ecological status at the proposed area (around 6 km of coastline), mapped the seagrass Posidonia oceanica beds and priority habitats with ArcGIS, recorded transects with an underwater camera, photographed and identified macroscopic flora and fauna species, and evaluated the impacts to the marine environment from the construction of breakwaters at the coastal region. The report was submitted to NTUA in 2010 and the EIA (122/2012) was submitted to the Department of Environment in 2012.
