New project launched – Exploring mesophotic reefs in UKOTs

June 2024

We are excited to announce the Mesophos Project, launched in April 2024. This one-year initiative, funded by Darwin Plus and in partnership with the Blue Marine Foundation, focuses on the mesophotic ecosystems of Cyprus’ UK Overseas Territories. These ecosystems, found between depths of 50 to 200 meters, are crucial yet under-researched, hosting diverse marine communities such as corals, sponges, and maerl beds.

Utilizing advanced ROVs, the project aims to map and assess these zones, integrating local ecological knowledge with scientific data to inform conservation strategies. The findings will guide management actions to protect these fragile habitats.

We depend on your contributions to detect and map these essential habitats. If you have any relevant information, please share it with us at Your support is vital to our efforts!
