Maria Elia holds a BA in Education from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MSc on Education for Environment and Sustainable Development from Frederick University of Cyprus. Her MSc thesis was focused on the role of parents in the connection of children with nature. She is currently a PhD student on Learning in Natural Sciences and Environment at the University of Cyprus with a full scholarship.

She is a certified SCUBA diver (PADI Open Diver) and first-aid qualified. She is working at MER since 2020 supporting fieldwork activities, samplings, and being mainly responsible for the dissemination / educational activities of EU and national projects.

Her primary research interests include the marine awareness, sustainable development, citizen-science, and environmental education. She strongly believes that education is the most important pillar in developing conscious citizens with deep understanding of environmental issues, and attitudes that can resolve the environmental challenges of the society.
