Maïté began her career in international hospitality and sales, but at the age of 26, she made a life-changing decision to pursue her passion for marine science and scuba diving. She took the first step by enrolling in an online Master’s program in international marine science at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland. A couple of months later, to gain hands-on experience, she embarked on a 2-month marine conservation internship in Honduras. There, she first obtained her PADI Divemaster and Enriched Air (Nitrox) certifications and then participated in coral nursery monitoring, research dives, and lionfish population monitoring.
Following this enriching experience, she pursued another Master’s degree, this time in Integrated Coastal Management and Fisheries Science at Pascal Paoli University of Corsica. During her studies, she expanded her skill set through a Geographical Information System (GIS) Internship in Southern Corsica. There, she sharpened her expertise in spatial analysis, habitat mapping, and creating informative visual materials using QGIS and Adobe Illustrator. This degree also enabled her to acquire a plethora of hard skills, including proficiency in R Studio, data transcription, and statistical analysis using Excel and XLSTAT.
In the last year of her two Master’s programs, Maïté joined the MER team in the summer of 2023 to gain additional experience in marine research. During her 2-month internship at MER, she participated in scientific monitoring programs, conducted ecological assessments of Posidonia oceanica meadows, and sorted macroalgae to evaluate the impact of coastal industrial projects on the marine environment. This experience allowed her to enhance her data collection and analysis skills, as well as her proficiency in using hydrological monitoring equipment. She was particularly enthusiastic about strengthening her hard skills by utilizing various software programs such as Adobe Illustrator, PhotoQuad, and R Studio, depending on the project requirements. She is a great person to work with and be around.
