M.Sc. International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology, University of Bremen (2019 – 2021)
Hannes was in the 3rd term of his Master’s Degree, in which students conduct a project on a freely chosen topic in a facility or institute of desire. He chose to be part of MER’s team and while collecting data for his master’s project he assisted with field, lab and office work. He was part of several ongoing projects of MER, including RELIONMED LIFE+, a project aiming to tackle the invasive lionfish (P. miles) in Cypriot waters. Hannes assisted in in organisational matters of the sixth RELIONMED lionfish removal derby.
He is a person who learns the most through hands-on experience and therefore during his B.Sc. studies he realised two semesters abroad. At first, Hannes went to Spitsbergen (Svalbard), Norway for six months to study arctic biology and ecology at UNIS (The University Centre in Svalbard) in an effort to understand climate change in a rapidly changing environment. He then traveled to Cali, Colombia where he completed a five-month internship in collaboration with Javeriana University Cali and University del Valle. During his thesis he observed the effect of environmental changes on temperate marine plankton plasticity in an experimental setup on Heligoland, a small archipelago in the German Bight of the North Sea.
In his master’s project, he is trying to elucidate the potential benefits of two Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Dasoudi & Amathounta in the coastal waters of Limassol, Cyprus and to investigate species and functional diversity, biomass, origin (alien vs. native) and the relevant traits of fish species detected within the MPAs.
During his 5-month stay at MER, Hannes was keen in learning new scientific techniques as well as gaining more hands-on experience that will help form his future path. He was enthusiastic to extend his camera skills as well as improving his ability in scientific writing. He already knows that the experienced team at MER will contribute to his growth as a scientist and person and Hannes hopes that he can make a lasting impression.
Hannes has accomplished three scuba diving certificates (PADI certificates: OW Diver, Advanced OW Diver, Enriched Air (Nitrox)). He is fluent in English and Spanish besides his native language (German).
