Duration of Internship: February 2022 – May 2022

B.Sc. Environmental Science, University of Genoa (2013 – 2018)
MSc, Marine Biology and Ecology, University of Genoa (2018 – 2021)

Elena holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and, last year, graduated with a Master’s degree in Marine Biology and Ecology from the University of Genoa (Italy), where she studied the impacts of marine heatwaves on the epiphyte community of Posidonia oceanica. She possesses a SCUBA license (open water level) and has recently started an advanced class.

After winning a scholarship, she joined MER’s team to further pursue her interest in marine biology and ecology. During her 4-month internship, Elena had the opportunity to enhance both her practical and theoretical skills. Collaborating on several projects at MER enabled her to gain experience in sorting macrofauna organisms, identifying marine species (using samples and multimedia materials), and conducting various laboratory analyses. She also participated in field monitoring and sampling, gaining experience in the consultancy sector.

She stated: “I really appreciate my time at MER, thanks to that I was able to gain a broader overview of the sectors in which I can specialize. Equally important, I had the opportunity to work with a diverse team of people from all around the world, coming from different backgrounds, with whom I maintained contact even after completing my internship.
